Understanding Dry Skin
Dry skin is a common issue for many people. It manifests as a tight, sometimes flaky feeling, often with very fine, invisible pores. It can feel as if your skin is too small, and expression lines can easily become more pronounced. Do you know that feeling? It's a widespread problem. In this article, I will delve into the structure of dry skin, its causes, and the effective solution provided by our 4-step skincare routine. Before I share solutions for dry skin, it's important to understand the structure of the skin and our skin philosophy.

Understanding dry skin layers
When we look at the skin, we see that it consists of three main layers: the epidermis, the dermis, and the subcutis. Dry skin is primarily influenced by changes in the epidermis and dermis.
- Epidermis: The outermost layer responsible for the barrier function. In dry skin, the barrier function is disrupted, leading to increased moisture loss and dryness. Additionally, there may be structural issues with nutrient absorption from the body to the skin. Therefore, the absorption of moisture and nutrients in the small intestine is less effective in those with dry skin, resulting in inadequate hydration and nourishment from within.
- Dermis: The middle layer containing collagen and elastin, which provide elasticity and firmness. Poor blood circulation in this layer can contribute to a lack of nourishment and hydration for the skin. Due to reduced blood flow, essential moisture and nutrients do not reach the skin sufficiently.
- Subcutis: The deepest layer, mainly consisting of fat tissue, which helps with insulation and protection. In dry skin, this layer is thinner.
4 main reasons for dry skin
What causes dry skin?
Dry skin can have various causes:
- Nutrition: Insufficient intake of essential fatty acids Omega-3-6-9, vitamins (A, B, C, E), minerals and trace elements can contribute to dry skin. Nutrition plays a crucial role in hydrating and nourishing the skin from within.
- Circulation: Poor blood circulation can prevent the skin from receiving enough nutrients and oxygen, contributing to dryness.
- Dehydration: Exposure to cold, wind, sun, and dry air can dehydrate the skin. Frequent contact with water and soap can also strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness.
- Moisture Retention: Even with sufficient water intake, dry skin can occur if the skin cannot retain moisture. This often results from a compromised skin barrier.
