The truth about collagen supplements: why your skin deserves more

Collagen is the buzzword in beauty land. Powders, pills, potions - everywhere they promise to make your wrinkles disappear like snow in the sun. But what is the real deal? And why did the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) yesterday fine several online shops because of misleading claims about collagen supplements?

What is collagen anyway?

Collagen is the body's own protein and the main building material for your skin, bones, joints and connective tissue. Starting at age 25, its natural production declines, which becomes visible as wrinkles, sagging andduller skin.

Not surprisingly, the industry comes up with "collagen supplements. But do they work?

Why collagen supplements don't do what they promise

Most collagen supplements consist of hydrolyzed collagen (collagen peptides) derived from fish skin or cattle. But here's the problem:

  • The body does not recognize these collagen peptides as "dermal collagen.. They are broken down into amino acids, just like any other protein you eat. Your body then decides where those amino acids go - and that's rarely your face.

  • There is no scientific evidence that ingested collagen is selectively used for skin .. It does not automatically end up in your wrinkles or connective tissue, no matter how much you want it to.

That's why the NVWA banned claims suggesting that collagen pills lead directly to younger-looking skin.
