Right now in Switzerland, 175 countries are discussing a global binding agreement against plastic pollution. The urgency is high: plastic is now in placentas, rain snow in Antarctica and in the stomachs of newborn albatrosses. Every day, the equivalent of 2,000 trucks of plastic disappears into oceans, rivers and lakes. Its production is unsustainable.
Yet oil and chemical companies are trying to block the agreement. They intimidate scientists, send lobbyists (220 at the last summit in South Korea alone) and push recycling as a solution. But recycling - as nice as it sounds - is just a smokescreen.
