There has been much debate about essential oils in skincare in recent years. Some sources call them irritating or even harmful. And yes, as a skin expert and founder of MOTHR EARTH PROOF® I often see this confusion among women who are looking for real, effective and natural skincare. So let's look at the facts together.
What exactly are essential oils?
Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts extracted from flowers, leaves, roots or bark. Think lavender, frankincense or sandalwood. They contain volatile aromatic substances that not only smell wonderful, but also have powerful therapeutic properties: anti-inflammatory, soothing, antibacterial, cell renewing. And they have another very nice property, they can penetrate deeper into your skin layers and are really effective! They are what you call powerhouse ingredients if used correctly and within dermal limits. Take a look with me!
So why do they get such a bad name?
In the media and even within the conventional cosmetics industry, essential oils are sometimes lumped together with synthetic fragrances. But that's comparing apples to oranges.
Reality:
-
Synthetic fragrances are often composed of petrochemicals (made from petroleum) that can be really harmful and toxic to your skin and body.
-
Essential oils or plant extracts, when used correctly, work with your skin instead of against it. They repair, stimulate and solve skin problems.
The key: concentration & knowledge
In the European Union, all cosmetic brands are required to adhere to the IFRA guidelines and dermal limits.. Those limits specify exactly how much essential oil can be safely used in a product.
At MOTHR EARTH PROOF we work strictly according to these guidelines. Our formulas are not only safe, but also balanced based on skin type, age and sensitivity.
So why do some people react anyway?
A skin reaction can have several causes:
-
General hypersensitivity: Some people react to almost all substances, including natural ones. This is a very small percentage of people. The majority of people do not have this extreme hypersensitivity. usually such sensitivity is associated with other illnesses and medication use.
-
Internal triggers.: Skin reactions can occur because of something you ate or stress, and are then mistakenly attributed to your skincare. Again, this is a very small percentage of people.
-
Overdose or poor formulation.: Not every brand knows how to use essential oils correctly. But the same goes for synthetics that most skincare is full of.
'I am often amazed at the ease with which skincare is advertised that contains strong preservatives (which are also used as anti-lice agents, for example) and other cheap filler ingredients that besides being harmful, do nothing good for your skin.'
What makes our approach different?
We believe in the intelligence of nature. Therefore, we combine essential oils within safe limits with skin-restoring plant oils such as:
-
Jojoba oil: resembles skin's own sebum
-
Black currant oil: anti-inflammatory
-
Sea buckthorn oil: rich in vitamins C and E
And we deliberately choose oils known for their skin friendliness, such as lavender, geranium, frankincense and sandalwood. These support the regeneration of mature skin without burdening it.
Don't be fooled by fear marketing
Big synthetic brands and household names have a vested interest in presenting natural ingredients in a negative light. Because the less you rely on the power of nature, the more you become dependent on chemical creams that suppress symptoms instead of supporting the skin and that do not solve your skin problem but worsen it.
Conclusion
Essential oils are not dangerous. They are powerful. And power requires knowledge. If formulated with care and skill - as we do at MOTHR EARTH PROOF - they can actually give your skin peace, balance and vitality.
Trust your skin. Trust nature. Trust in craftsmanship.
