What does a vitamin B2 deficiency look like in your skin? And what can you do about it?

Have you done anything about those dry corners of your mouth? Sometimes the skin there actually cracks so you have chaps at the corners of your mouth. This can spread to flaky unsettled skin at your nose and nasolabial folds and around your mouth? Nothing works and even the remedies from the doctor don't really work. Then chances are your skin is trying to tell you something. Not with words, but through signals from within.

Very specifically: this may indicate a deficiency of vitamin B2, or riboflavin. ... a what? Yes a deficiency of Vitamin B2, aka riboflavin.

And no - you won 't solve this with an ointment or peel. In fact, aggressive treatments and creams often make it worse. Your skin becomes more sensitive, irritated and, before you know it, your doctor gives you an anti-inflammatory that suppresses the problem instead of solving it.

So what does help? Going back to the source. Supply your body with what it lacks. From the inside out.

🔍 How do you recognize a vitamin B2 deficiency?

A B2 deficiency often causes very obvious skin and mucosal symptoms, such as

:
  • Dry corners of your mouth or fissures at the corners of your mouth (cheilitis)

  • Redness or flaking around your nostrils

  • Wounds or sores around your mouth and nose

  • Restless, chapped or tight skin around your mouth

  • Sometimes even a burning sensation on the tongue or a dry throat

Dry corners of the mouth, inflamed corners of the mouth, dry lips with fissures (cheilosis), swollen and red mucous membranes of the mouth and pharynx, inflamed tongue (glossitis), seborrheic eczema (especially around the nose and between the nose and lips), anemia, eye complaints (sensitivity to light, burning, itching, tears), depression, hair loss....These are all symptoms of a vitamin B2 deficiency.

These symptoms occur because vitamin B2 is essential for cell renewal, mucosal health and the repair of your skin barrier.

💡What is the real solution?

So no expensive cream or heavy peeling - but repair from the inside out. this is how you get those dry mouth corners and fissures gone again.

1. Supplement your vitamin B2 with a good supplement

Choose a B-complex supplement or a specific B2 supplement (riboflavin-5-phosphate). This is because B2 works better in combination with other B vitamins because they reinforce each other. Personally, I would always choose a high-quality supplement such as B2 complex from Biovitaal, for example.

Note: if you choose another one, take one with the active form of vitamin B2, so your body absorbs it easily.

2. Eat foods rich in vitamin B2

Foods high in riboflavin include

:
  • Eggs (especially the yolk)

  • Almonds

  • Liver (organic chicken or beef)

  • Yogurt or kefir (note: not everyone can tolerate this and it can easily cause acne if you are sensitive to it)

  • Salmon and mackerel

  • Shiitake and mushrooms

  • Spinach, kale and broccoli

  • Whole grain cereals (quinoa, brown rice, barley, spelt)

If you eat vegan, pay extra attention to your B2 intake by supplementing with a nutritional supplement.

The other day, a specialist showed me how she tried to improve skin with skincare. I would not recommend that myself because it cannot be solved externally. It was typsich a picture of B2 deficiency. It goes away once your deficiency is replenished.

3. Support your gut health with probiotics

Vitamin B2 is partly absorbed and processed in your intestines. If your gut is out of balance, even good nutrition may not be utilized as well.

Maintain a healthy gut flora with:

  • Fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi, tempeh or kefir

  • A high-quality probiotic (preferably choose a broad spectrum with lactobacilli and bifidobacteria)

  • Sufficientfiber from vegetables, legumes and seeds

Your skin is the mirror of your gut - so treat it with love.

A great probiotic supplement are those from Nutergia. These are probiotics that really do something for you.

🧴 And if you do want to put something on your skin?

Then use pure natural skin care that soothes, calms and supports, such as

:
  • Raw organic honey (anti-inflammatory, healing)

  • Pure Aloe vera juice which is in our Step 2

  • Our Step 3 Elixir Vitamim Bomb Full of wonderful oils such as apricot kernel oil, jojoba oil, abyssinian oil, passionflower oil, ribus nigrum (blackcurrant oil), rosehip oil, perilla oil, acai oil and more beautiful vitamin rich oils containing chamomile and calendula extract. Nourishing, anti irritation, protective and a vitamin bomb for your skin.

  • A simple chamomile cream or marigold ointment (Calendula), as incorporated in all steps of our effective skincare line.

In any case, avoid: perfumes, alcohol, acids (such as glycolic acid), retinol, synthetic additives.

Let your skin heal at its own pace - without forcing it.
