As founder and skincare formulator of MOTHR EARTH PROOF with years of experience in natural skincare and a background in holistic skin therapy, I see it every day: the confusion. In a world full of promises, expensive creams and glossy advertisements and influencers who are beautiful anyway - as a woman of 50+ you sometimes don't know what to put on your skin or not. Does retinol really work? Is alcohol in your toner harmful? Does skincare have to sting to be effective? And what does natural skincare really do differently?
In this article, I take you through the biggest myths and facts in skincare. And I'll tell you what you can trust - gentle, effective and without harmful side effects.
Myth 1: "If it stings, it works."
Many people think a product only works when you feel it tingle or sting. But that's a big misconception. Tingling is often a sign of irritation, not of effectiveness. Ingredients such as synthetic acids or harsh alcohols can damage the skin barrier.
Fact: A product is supposed to be soothing, nourishing and supportive. Natural ingredients such as chamomile, calendula and sea buckthorn soothe the skin without damaging it.
Myth 2: "Natural skin care is less effective."
On the contrary. High-quality botanical ingredients often contain a wealth of antioxidants, vitamins and restorative fatty acids. Consider:
-
Sea Buckthorn oil (rich in vitamin C, restorative), powerful oil full of important fatty acids and vitamin A.
-
Shea Butter (intensely nourishing, full of vitamins A, E, and packed with anti oxidant fatty acids) the secret behind beautiful skin and a strong skin barrier.
-
Liquorice root extract (brightening and anti-inflammatory) Brightens your skin, removes pigmentation marks with longer use. Very nice ingredient. Is in the Herbal Miracle Mask®.
-
Symphytum (comfrey). (cell renewing and soothing), gets rid of inflammation, improves skin appearance, contains alantoin, which is skin restorative.
These substances work in harmony with your skin - without disturbing your natural balance.
Myth 3: "Synthetic ingredients are more scientifically based"
Synthetic substances like parabens, silicones or petroleum derivatives are cheap and provide instant sensations (like smoothness or shine), but do nothing for the long-term health of your skin. They often literally put a layer over the skin, reducing the penetration of nutrition and oxygen.
Fact: Natural ingredients not only work on the outside, but also also support your skin's natural regenerative ability because they are absorbed. The molecules are small enough for that.
Myth 4: "Retinol is the only solution against wrinkles"
Retinol (vitamin A) certainly has an effect on cell renewal, but in many women aged 50+ it can cause redness, flaking and hypersensitivity. Especially with hormonal or sensitive skin.
Fact: There are natural alternatives such as bakuchiol and sea buckthorn that are gentler AND effective against skin aging - without side effects. Step 3 Elixir Vitamin Bomb is full of oils chosen because they contain so many vitamins and antioxidants. It absorbs very quickly because the molecules are small enough to get deeper into the skin.
Myth 5: "A good cream has to be expensive."
Price says little about quality. Many luxury brands invest more in marketing than in ingredients. Rather, look at the INCI list: is there really something nourishing at the top, such as vegetable oils and herbal extracts? If it says mostly water, and then synthetic ingredients with complicated names, you know your skin is being overloaded with synthetic preservatives and substances your skin is not happy with.
At MOTHR EARTH PROOF®, we use only active, 100% natural ingredients that actually do something for your skin.
What is good for your skin?
-
Vegetable oils such as jojoba, sea buckthorn and black currant - nourish deeply and restore the barrier.
-
Hydrating hydrolates such as rosewater and chamomile - soothe and refresh.
-
Antioxidants from plants - protect against aging and free radicals.
-
Natural acids from fruits - support mild exfoliation without damage.
What's really not good for your skin (especially at 50+)?
-
Alcohol denat. - Dehydrates and irritates.
-
Synthetic fragrances - can cause allergies and hormonal disruption.
-
Silicones and mineral oils - put a film over the skin that is suffocating.
-
Excessive exfoliation or use of acids - disrupts your skin barrier and accelerates aging.
- Synthetic preservatives such as anti-lice and other substances that will make you jump backwards if you know what they are. And ordinary skincare products even the very expensive ones are full of these.
Finally, your skin deserves softness and results
As you age, your skin changes. It becomes thinner, drier and more sensitive. Especially then you want to use products that do not over-stimulate but support. That nourish, protect and stimulate the natural healing process. And you don't do that with synthetic, aggressive substances, but with the intelligence of nature.
My advice as a skin expert: Look beyond the marketing, read the ingredients and listen to your skin .. The truth is not in promises, but in what your skin is telling you. Order our samples, to let your skin speak for itself!
Don't be fooled by myths. Choose consciously. And give your skin the loving care it really needs.
