Many people, especially children and teenagers, suffer from them: small, hard bumps on the upper arms, cheeks, or thighs. They feel rough, as if you have goose bumps that won't go away. This skin condition is called keratosis pilaris, also called "chicken skin." It is harmless, but can be annoying - especially if your skin is sensitive or bothers you.
In my practice, I frequently get questions about these bumps. Parents send me pictures, women 40+ casually mention them as "something they've been walking around with for years. And often it turns out after some inquiries: it is keratosis pilaris. Fortunately, something can be done about it.
What exactly is keratosis pilaris?
Keratosis pilaris is caused by too much keratin being produced. This is a protein that protects your skin, but in this condition, it accumulates in the hair follicles. As a result, the pores become clogged and small, hard bumps appear. You often see them on:
-
Upper arms
-
Cheeks
-
Thighs
-
Buttocks
The skin feels rough, dry and sometimes a little red. In some people, it itches.
Common misconceptions
What I often see is that this skin is treated with aggressive scrubs or creams from the doctor that dry out the skin. Often with tretinoin, urea or other acids. But in doing so, you don't address the cause. In fact, it damages the skin barrier, making the skin more sensitive and troubled.
The real cause: nutritional deficiencies
What I see again and again in my practice: keratosis pilaris is caused by a shortage of vitamin A and essential fatty acids (omega 3, EPA, DHA). Trace minerals and B vitamins also play a role.
Therefore, I often recommend a supplement that contains all of these components. My favorite: Super Algae from Zen Wheatgrass - pure, plant-based, full of beta-carotene, EPA/DHA, zinc, selenium, B vitamins and more. Link to Super Algae
