An ode to all mothers
Mother's Day is a moment of gratitude. It is a day to reflect on everyone who fulfills or has ever fulfilled a maternal role - mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers, plus-mothers, trans-mothers, chosen mothers and everyone who is a mother in love and care.
Every human being on earth is born of a mother
The most extraordinary thing is that a mother gives life. Every second about 4.3 babies are born somewhere in the world. That means: as many mothers. Women who, without a manual or preparation, take a new life in their arms for the first time. Motherhood is not something you go to school for, it is a leap of faith - fueled by love. And that deserves recognition. Every day. And especially on Mother's Day. This year on May 11.
My mother to me
My mother carried me under her heart for nine months, and has never let go of me since. She is my best friend, my safe haven, my soul mate. No one laughs harder at my jokes, no one senses so well when I need something. She's the first person I call when I've had a bad day, or the one who listens to the little nonsensical things.
She lifts me up when I stumble, wipes away my tears and offers her shoulders when I want to lean. She is my role model. And the woman who taught her that - my grandmother - the reason she became such a mother. I owe everything to them. Therefore, this Mother's Day I want to give them the love they always give me.
Motherhood is love that is passed down
From mother to daughter. An invisible thread that connects generations. Sometimes that love is in the smallest things: the smell of her cream, the gentle motion with which she strokes your hair behind your ear.
As a child, on Mother's Day, I always asked the same caustic question, "But Mom, when is it actually Children's Day?" She would smile and say, "Honey, it's every day."
At the time, I thought that was just a vague answer. Now I see the love in it. Because the older I get, the more I see: my mother is there. Always. She gives, without taking. Puts herself in second place. And never complains about it - even when she would have every reason to.
So I want to do things differently this year. No hastily bought bunch of flowers or chocolates. This year I want to really spoil her and with what better than: time. Rest.
