The word acne refers to a wide range of skin problems, there are different forms and different causes. The Dutch Association for Dermatology and Venereology (NVDV) names acne as one of the most common skin conditions.

In what places can you get acne?

It can occur on your face, back, chest and or shoulders. Variations of acne range from mild forms such as comedones (blackheads), to more severe versions, such as cystic acne, hormonal acne, adult acne, and so on.

How does acne develop?

Acne can occur when small inflammations occur around hair follicles (Radboundumc). The hair follicles can then become clogged with sebum (skin fat), dead skin cells and/or bacteria. Once there is too much sebum, it causes an accumulation of sebum, which can no longer be properly drained (Maxima Medical Center). This causes skin irritations, which can develop into various forms of acne.

Hormonal fluctuations cause Acne?

The most common period when acne occurs is during puberty. This is often due to hormonal fluctuations. However, acne can also occur later in life, such as during pregnancy and/or around menopause.

Factors such as stress, diet, cosmetics, environmental factors or genetic predisposition may play a role. Although acne goes away on its own in many cases, it can still cause mental symptoms and reduced self-confidence.
