The European Union is known for its strict regulation of cosmetics. And on paper, that seems like consumer protection: ingredient lists, safety tests, banned substances. But behind the scenes, the playing field has grown lopsided.
Large industrial players with labs full of synthetics can easily adapt to changing legislation. But small, independent brands working with pure, plant-based ingredients are finding it increasingly difficult.
Why? Because many traditional herbs, oils and extracts are under tighter control than their synthetic counterparts. They are harder to standardize, more complex to register and subject to increasingly expensive safety records.

An example: why some natural substances disappear
Take lavender oil. In its pure form, it contains natural constituents such as linalool or geraniol. These substances can trigger reactions in hypersensitive people, just as synthetic perfumes do. But where synthetic perfumes are judged component by component, essential oils are scrutinized as a whole.
Consequence? Small brands shun these active plants as a precautionary measure, or are forced into costly reformulations. Consumers are thus losing access to age-old skincare traditions.
Why do synthetic substances continue to be allowed?
Because they are easier to regulate. They always behave the same, under all circumstances. But that convenience comes at a price:

Hormone-disrupting effects: Many synthetic substances - such as parabens, phthalates and some preservatives - can build up in the body behave like hormones. This disrupts the natural hormonal balance and can affect fertility, development and immunity.

Water pollution and ecological damage: Synthetic substances such as microplastics, UV filters and silicones enter the environment through shower drains. They break down poorly, accumulate in aquatic life and disrupt ecosystems. Fish and plankton ingest these substances, returning to our food chain.

Damage to the skin barrier: Many synthetic emulsifiers, cleansers and fragrances strip the skin of its natural fats. This weakens the skin barrier, leading to dryness, sensitivity, inflammation and premature aging.

No nourishing value: Synthetics often give the feeling of softness (as with silicones), but do not deliver any active ingredients to the skin. They fill, mask or preserve, but do not nourish.
