When the air gets drier, the wind colder and the light softer, not only nature changes - your skin reacts as well.
Suddenly, you notice redness on your cheeks, fine flakes, a tight feeling or even minor inflammation and cracked capillaries. How come? And why now?
I see many women around me wondering, "Why do I suddenly have rashes, red spots, when I didn't before. Why does my skin react so strongly as soon as autumn begins?"
At MOTHR EARTH PROOF® we not only look at the skin on the outside, but also at the processes in your body. The skin is always reflecting what is happening in the body. And in the transition from summer to fall, the lungs and colon are especially stressed - two organs that are closely linked to the quality of your skin.
Autumn - a season of dryness and letting go
Autumn brings cooler and drier air and more temperature fluctuations. And your body suddenly has to work harder to retain moisture and fat as a result, and you'll notice it by
:-
a dry, tight feeling on your skin
-
redness or sensitivity on the cheeks
-
more impurities or inflammations
-
rosacea or cracked capillaries
At the same time, your digestion slows down in autumn. The fire burns much less hard, in fact, often your agni (digestive fire) lights up. Your body focuses its energy more inward, just as nature and trees do, so waste products are not excreted as quickly. The lungs and intestines are extra sensitive then, two important organs of excretion - and you can see it directly in the skin.
"In autumn, I more often get the question: is it because of the skincare I use that I have a rash now? My answer is invariably: no, probably not, in 99% of cases. It's your intestines that don't release as well in the fall and therefore keep your body less clean. So what you may look at is your diet: what are you eating? More on this later."
The skin as a mirror of the lungs and intestines
The lungs and skin share one task: they are in direct contact with the outside world and protect us from outside influences. The intestines do the same, and in Eastern and Japanese medicine, your intestines are also outside world because they are in contact with what you eat. It enters your body only after taking in oxygen (Lungs) and food absorption (Small Intestine) and fluid absorption (Large Intestine). They determine what the body absorbs and what it releases.
-
When the lungs are weakened by temperature changes and weak digestion, the skin becomes dehydrated more quickly. Breathing is more shallow, the body receives less oxygen and moisture.
The skin loses its freshness, becomes dull or sensitive (absorption of food that has not been fully digested giving an inflammatory reaction in the blood), and heals more slowly. -
When the intestines are overloaded, waste products (mucus, phlegm, vapor, digestive slugs/excesses) accumulate in the body, which are then worked out through the skin.
This can lead to turmoil in the skin in typically recognizable areas such as the cheeks: rosacea, inflammation, redness or an uneven complexion.
So healthy skin requires not only proper care, but also proper nutrition and a strong digestive fire.
What your body and skin need now
Recovery in autumn begins with warmth, softness and nourishment - from within and without. During this time, your body may be grounded and nourished to support the lungs and gut.
1. Eat warm, soft and easily digestible
Choose soups, stews, porridge and cooked/steamed vegetables instead of raw vegetables or cold foods such as smoothies. Avoid smoothies altogether now if you want beautiful skin. Cooking makes food more digestible and saves digestive energy (which you consume if you keep drinking smoothies).
2. Add healthy fats
Think ghee, olive oil, avocado, sesame oil or flaxseed oil - they lubricate the inside of the body, so to speak, which helps against dryness of skin, lungs and intestines.
3. Use mildly warming herbs
Herbs such as ginger, curcumma, cumin, black mustard seed, cinnamon, fennel, cardamom and anise promote blood flow and support digestion.
They provide warmth and encourage healthy absorption of nutrients.
4. Avoid dehydrating foods
Avoid coffee, green tea, alcohol, raw vegetables, crusty bread, potato chips and sugar during this time - they further dehydrate the body and weaken the intestines.
5. Drink plenty, and especially warm and hot water
Lukewarm and hot water, herbal teas of fennel or licorice and light broths help to hydrate the body from within without cooling the digestive system.
6. Choose seasonal foods
Nature offers just what you need now: pumpkin, parsnip, apple, pear, chestnut, sweet potato, carrot and oats.
They nourish, soothe and restore the skin's natural glow.
What you can do now for your skin
Recovery in autumn starts with softness, nourishment and protection - not with harsh exfoliators or strong cleansing products.
Skin needs fats, moisture and restorative substances that strengthen its natural barrier.
1. Cleanse mildly and nourish
Use a gentle cleanser such as Step 1 FLOWER + SHINE for sensitive or red skin, or Step 1 PEEL + SHINE for normal, dry or oily skin. This way you remove dead skin cells without disturbing the natural lipid layer.
2. Hydrate in layers
Our Step 2 SKIN DRINK SERUM with Hyaluronic Acid, Niacinamide, Ectoin® and Symphytum Officinale replenishes moisture deficiencies, reduces redness and strengthens the skin barrier.
3. Nourish and restore
Then add a drop of Step 3 ELIXIR VITAMIN BOMB - rich in vitamins A, C, E and B - to keep skin supple and prevent dryness lines.
4. Protect and Seal
Close with Step 4 REPAIR TIMELESS BEAUTY, the restorative cream with Ectoin® Bitop that hydrates skin for up to seven days and protects it from cold, blue light and pollution.
Why this season is just an opportunity
Autumn invites you to slow down and recover.
By nourishing your skin instead of forcing it, you help it adapt to the season.
When your lungs can breathe freely and your digestion can do its work quietly, you see it reflected in your skin: more rest, more radiance, more balance.
At MOTHR EARTH PROOF®, we believe that beauty occurs when body, skin and nature are move with each other - every season. 🍂
