Why do so many women have wrinkles around the mouth after age 50?
It happened to me too, I think to all of us, actually. I see it in my girlfriends too. All of a sudden they're worse, those lines around your lips. And the lips are thinner. You look in the mirror and suddenly you see them: those fine lines near the lips, vertical lip lines, or those typical wrinkles above the upper lip. Also known as smoker's lines - even if you've never touched a cigarette. But read on, because in this blog I describe how I reduce them.
For many women after age 50, wrinkles around the mouth are a source of insecurity. The skin around the lips becomes thinner, collagen diminishes, and you lose that youthful volume in your lip contour. Lips appear less full, and when applying lipstick, you suddenly notice that the product creeps into those lines.
And then comes the moment: you wonder if b*t*x or fillers might be the only solution. Fortunately, you really don't have to. You really can greatly reduce them with the techniques I describe below. So stay tuned for a while longer...:-)
How do wrinkles form around the mouth?
Let's briefly zoom in on what really happens in the skin.
1. Collagen loss around the mouth
After age 40 - and especially after age 50 - your skin produces less and less collagen and elastin. These are the building blocks that provide firmness and elasticity. The skin around the mouth is naturally thinner, so you see that loss here more quickly.
2. Less blood flow in your lips
After age 50 when you are in transition or just passing through it, your body's metabolism slows down. Your stomach does not digest as well and there is a shortage of body fluids, including blood. so there is less blood available to flow abundantly everywhere. You can see this happening in your hair, your nails, your skin, but certainly also in your lips. In even more places, but that takes us too far. In fact, full red lips are a sign of youth, of fertility, of abundance. And that falls away with menopause. Estrogen levels drop and the abundance that fertility radiates visibly diminishes. This is also very visible in the wrinkles around your mouth and the thinning and graying/whitening of your lips.
What we often forget is that blood flow and circulation is also nourishment for the skin and keeps it young.
3. Repeated movements of your mouth
The reduced blood flow causes the movement muscles to draw more from talking, laughing, kissing, frowning - after all, your mouth is in constant motion. Those little contractions and the lack of blood flow over time create what are known as perioral wrinkles - lines around the mouth.
4. Reduced hydration and fat layer
The skin loses its blood flow also its natural moisture and fat layer. As a result, the skin dries out faster, fine lines appear and the lips lose their full youthful shape.
5. Hormonal changes and estrogen decline
During and after menopause, your skin changes. It becomes thinner, drier and more sensitive to external damage - think UV and pollution. But she is also under the influence of reduced blood flow less moisturized from within.
And no - none of this has anything to do with smoking. Of course, smoking exacerbates the problem, but even women who lived their lives in a healthy way get lip wrinkles or mouth corner wrinkles. It is simply a sign of aging.
Why is this such a touchy subject especially for women 50+?
For many women, wrinkles above the lip symbolize more than just aging. It touches on something deeper: the loss of your youthfulness, of your femininity. You don't quite recognize yourself in the mirror anymore. Sometimes you still feel energetic, sensual, powerful - but your skin tells a different story.
Every day I speak to women who are sad or uncertain about this. Women who whisper, "I look tired, but I don't feel that way at all..." This touches me, because we deserve to radiate self-confidence at every stage of life - without having to manipulate our bodies with injectables.
What can you do about wrinkles around the mouth - without botox?
Fortunately, there are powerful natural ways to reduce lines around the mouth and keep the lip region fuller and healthier. Not a quick fix, but a lasting effect.
1. Work on skin from the inside and out
Hydrating and nourishing is crucial. Use products rich in natural vitamin A (a retinol alternative), vitamin E and omegas. These intensively nourish the skin, stimulate cell renewal and improve barrier function.
At MOTHR EARTH PROOF®, we use only natural active ingredients in all of our 4 steps. Our face cream and face oil are rich in shea butter, sea buckthorn, natural vitamin A and cold-pressed oils that are perfect for 50+ skin.
2. Facial cupping: stimulates blood flow and collagen
This is a life saving liphack.... yes really: cupping is crucial in reducing mouth wrinkles. I use this method almost daily and I see immediate results. By working with small cups along the mouth and on the lip edges, I stimulate blood circulation and activate collagen production. And yes, as I just explained, blood is crucial to the reduction of wrinkles. With Cupping, you stimulate blood flow, therefore the skin becomes re-nourished and plumped, and that softens vertical lip lines.
You can easily do this at home with a highly nourishing vitamin oil (like our Step 3 Elixir vitamin bomb), or get treated by Elsa of Twist at La Twist Beauty Salon.
3. Daily facial massage - elevator and relax
With specific massage techniques using a quasha stone, you can activate and relax the muscles around your mouth. Especially the muscle around your mouth (orbicularis oris) is often overused, which aggravates marionette lines and mouth corner wrinkles. Massage gently daily with upward movements to stimulate blood flow.
4. Prevent dehydration and protect from UV
Use a natural SPF daily and avoid drying products. Lips deserve care, too! Use a balm with nourishing oils or beeswax and apply it outside the lip rim as well.
5. Nourish your skin with regenerating ingredients
Ingredients like natural retinol (such as bakuchiol or pro-vitamin A from sea buckthorn) help repair damaged skin structures, without the irritating side effects of synthetic retinol.
